A Scooter Horn on Khánh Hội Street and a Game Nobody Can Win
At ten past four in District 4, one short horn and one lantern moved two squares left. Bao-Ngoc Thach is up, and so are you.
Are you still up? Good. Listen.
It is 4:10 in District 4 and a scooter horn goes off twice, short and polite, the way you knock on a door you like.
On the fourth floor above the alley, Bao-Ngoc Thach slides a paper lantern two squares to the left. The game is called Lamp Season. It has no score, no enemy, no last level. She has played it for 600 hours. Four hundred people are watching her place lanterns.
The horn comes again, further off. She slides the lantern back.
Nobody wins. Nobody is late. The sky over the river turns the colour of weak tea, and the lantern stays where she put it, for now.
