# Sister Plume and a Tray of Smoked Eel, One Step From the Line

Banned from Kelp Row since September, the performance artist spent forty minutes on Anchor Lane with her heel against the paint. She did not cross it.

Sister Plume stands on Anchor Lane at noon with her left heel against a line of yellow paint. The paint is eleven centimetres wide. She is not on it. She is one step past it.

The Kelp Row Traders' Committee laid the line in September, after the Tallow Hall show. The committee calls that show a flood. Plume calls it a first act.

Today she has a loudhailer, a stepladder and a folding chair. The chair faces the galleries. It is for the committee. Nobody sits in it.

She reads the ban letter aloud. Then she reads it again as a weather report. Then as a recipe. At minute twenty-two she reads only the signatures.

A man selling smoked eel from a tray at the corner of Gannet Street says it is his best Friday since June. He has not looked up once. He does not say whether he is for her or against her. He sells four tubs.

Across the line, a guard from the Tallow Hall stands with a clipboard. He is timing her. Forty minutes was not agreed with anyone. She simply stops at forty.

He writes it down. She asks for a copy. He says no. She says that is fine, she was there.
