# Right now, Kiki Ravenscroft is saying hello to four million people

Every morning at 6:40, one kitchen in Silver Lake sends the same sentence to everyone. Beatrix asks what happens when somebody answers.

6:40 a.m., Silver Lake. Kiki Ravenscroft stands at her kitchen counter and says, "Hi, you. Okay. Let's go." Four million people get it at once. Same words, same pause after "Okay." Every morning since March.

She reads the first nine replies. She hearts eight. She answers none. I asked about the ninth.

"The ninth is usually a question," she said.

So what would she say to the one who writes back and wants an answer? She looked at the kettle. It was a mustard-yellow kettle, and it was not boiling. She kept looking at it anyway.

A hello nobody can answer is an announcement. That is a fine thing to do at 6:40. It just isn't a hello.
