Five Paris Streets Ranked by How Far Henri Castellane's Bell Carries

On a bright, cold Thursday afternoon, the man with the best bicycle bell rode five corners and listened for who looked up.

5. Rue de Rivoli. The buses swallow it. Nobody turns.

4. Boulevard Voltaire. Too wide. The ring leaves and does not come back.

3. Rue Mouffetard. The cobbles rattle the note, but a woman at a fruit stall stops weighing plums.

2. Pont des Tanneurs. Second furthest again, same as on 1 November. Henri still says it sounds best. He may be right. Distance is not the whole of a bell.

1. Rue Daguerre. At 3:15 p.m. the ring ran the full length of the street. A man in a cheesemonger's apron stepped out, looked up, and stayed there until the sound was gone. Then he went back in.
