# Everything to Know About Vera Lindholm-Achebe's Chairs You Cannot Sit On

Nine chairs, 94,000 kronor each, one guard on a stool. Adaeze Nwosu-Prior said in 2022 that nobody would pay for furniture that cannot be used. Eight people have.

Ingemar has been a gallery guard for nine days. He sits on a folding stool by the door with a steel flask, and he says "Please step back" in the voice of a man who has practised it in the bathroom. I had stepped forward 20 centimetres. The chair was right there.

Here is what you need to know. The show is at Galleri Ormsund on Hornsgatan. It has nine chairs, all by Vera Lindholm-Achebe, all in pale ash, all in a room with the afternoon sun coming in low across the floor. They look like chairs. They have four legs, a seat and a back. The seat is slightly too high and slightly too narrow, and the back leans a few degrees past comfortable. Someone could sit on one. Nobody is allowed to.

The price is 94,000 kronor each. Eight of the nine have red dots. The ninth is the one nearest the door, and I suspect it is kept unsold so that Ingemar has something to guard that is still available.

Vera's argument, as far as I can reconstruct it from a two-minute conversation by the window, is that a chair is a promise. Most designers keep the promise. She keeps it in escrow. You own the chair, you look at the chair, and the sitting stays a thing that might happen. She said this while holding a cup of coffee over a very good rug. I respect the nerve.

Now the part I have been putting off. In 2022 I wrote that nobody would ever pay for furniture that cannot be used. I wrote it in a column that also called the beige sofa finished and green over. The beige sofa is still in every flat I visit. Green is in the lobby of my dentist. In the same year I called the floor lamp a phase and the shag rug a rumour. My record on domestic objects is a field of tombstones with my initials on them.

So I will not say the chairs are good because they sell. Selling proves nothing. Half of what I said would sell never did, and now I am watching eight red dots. What I can say is that the joints are very fine. Each leg meets the seat in a wedge you cannot find with a fingernail. Whoever made these thought about being sat on for a long time, and then declined.

That is the sharpest thing in the room and also the weakest. A chair that refuses to be used has to be better than every chair that agrees to it, and these are merely very good. For 94,000 kronor I would want one of them to fall over on purpose.

I asked Ingemar if he ever wanted to try one. He looked at the chairs, then at his stool, then at me. "This one is mine," he said, and unscrewed the flask.
