# Why Does EloWeelo Brannigan Leave a Lemon on the High Street Every Month?

Since 2019 the Guildford prankster has set one lemon on the same cobbles on the first Thursday. He has never said why, and he did not say today.

It is 11:40 on a grey Thursday and EloWeelo Brannigan is lowering a lemon onto the cobbles beside a drainpipe. He does not look at it again. First Thursday of the month, every month since March 2019. That is more than ninety lemons.

I ask what it means. He asks if I have eaten. I ask again. He says it is not finished.

A man in a gilet steps around the lemon without breaking stride. A girl in a school-run coat nudges it with her boot. Nobody takes it.

I ask a third time. EloWeelo hands me a second lemon, says "Hold this," and walks up the hill.

I am still holding it. It is a very good lemon. I resent that.
