# Right now, Rosalind Pryce is shooting a coat in a Smithdown Road bus shelter

Rosalind Pryce has shot only in bus shelters for eleven years. Our trend analyst told a room of 140 people it would be over by 2024, and she would like that on the record.

The model stands at stop F in a coat the colour of wet porridge. She is holding a carrier bag from a pet shop. It is 8:40 on a grey Thursday and the 86 goes past without stopping, because nobody has put a hand out.

Rosalind Pryce crouches on the pavement with a camera older than the model. She does not use a light. She does not use a reflector. She uses the shelter, which has three glass panels, one of them cracked, and a poster for a dental clinic that has been there since September.

I said this was finished. In March 2022 I stood in front of 140 people at a trade breakfast in a hotel ballroom and said the bus-shelter shoot would be dead by 2024. I had a slide. The slide had a small skull on it.

My reasons were that the light is flat, the backdrop is an advert and everyone has done it. All three were true. None of them mattered.

"The light is flat," Rosalind says, not looking up. "That's why it works. Nobody argues with flat."

She is right, and the coat proves it. It is a long single-breasted wool from a label called Mallow Fenn, £640, and in a studio it would look like a very good coat. In the shelter it looks like what a coat is for, which is waiting for something that is late. A man in a hi-vis jacket asks the model where she got it. Rosalind tells him it is not for sale yet. He says he'll wait.

My record deserves a paragraph. In 2019 I announced the return of the pocket square. In 2021 I declared beige over. On this one street, this morning, I count nine beige coats before 9 a.m. I have been wrong about beige twice and about the shelter once, and the shelter is the more embarrassing, because I was so pleased with the skull.

By noon the cloud has gone and the sun is hard and low over the rooftops. We walk to Dovecote Coffee on Bold Street and Rosalind takes the window table. Blind-shaped stripes of light fall across her camera as she scrolls back through the frames. She stops on one where the model is looking down the road and the cracked panel runs straight through her shoulder. She taps it twice and says nothing.

I will make a prediction. Rosalind Pryce will still be shooting in bus shelters in 2030. Given my record, that means she will stop by spring.
