# Everything You Need to Know About Ansel Quire's Falls

Ansel Quire only paints what he has fallen on. From the lip of the old Dust Quarter bowl, on a windy afternoon, he points at what comes next.

Ansel Quire stands at the lip of the bowl with a paper cup of tea and the wind pulling at his sleeve. Below him the concrete is worn the colour of old soap.

The facts. He broke a wrist here at sixteen, in the shallow end. That became a canvas, 120 by 90, grey with one yellow streak. Since then: a ferry ramp, a bus shelter roof, nine steps outside a Kelp Row fish hall. Each has a painting. Nothing hangs that he has not landed on.

Nobody pours bowls like this now. The transitions are uneven and the coping is chalky and lovely.

So what is next? He points at the deep end, where the stone is cracked and pale. He has skated it for twenty years and never come off it. The painting, he says, is basically ready. He is just waiting for the fall.
