# Right Now in a Gdansk Car Park, Vesna Kowalczyk-Dread Is Bowing a Steel Spiral

A cardboard notice on a lamppost gave one hour's warning. Inside the car park, a mirrored beekeeper suit and two metres of riveted steel were already ringing.

The notice is taped to a lamppost at the end of the quay, marker on a flap of cardboard. Concert 15:00, car park. It is 14:02. I go.

Level one is open on the water side and the wind comes straight in off the Motława. Forty people stand in coats between painted pillars. In the middle, on a pallet, a spiral of sheet steel taller than a person, riveted, one rust seam running down its flank.

Vesna Kowalczyk-Dread draws a double bass bow across its edge. The first note takes two seconds to bloom. It sits near F sharp below middle C, about 185 hertz, with a fat overtone hovering a little flat above it, so the pitch wobbles like a fridge thinking. I count the decay. Eleven seconds. The last three are the car park answering back.

Her contact mic runs to a quarter-inch tape deck on a milk crate. 7.5 inches per second, I think, judging by the hiss. It is a warm hiss. I would not remove it.

Then the suit. Beekeeper veil, beekeeper jacket, sewn by hand, covered in mirror squares the size of postage stamps. Every time she leans into a stroke, flecks of grey sky wheel across the pillars. On a dull afternoon that is a lot of work for the sky, and it does it well.

She puts down the bow and takes a hammer. One strike on the upper curve gives a hard ping near 1.2 kilohertz that hangs for two seconds and then falls apart into rain. The man next to me nods at every ping like he is being paid per nod.

At 14:49 a delivery van reverses in and honks, long and flat. Vesna waits. Then she bows the spiral until it matches the horn. B flat, near enough. The driver turns the engine off and stays in his seat.

On the way out I check the lamppost. There is a new notice already. Tomorrow, one hour before.
